TOEFL Build a Sentence

Construir buenas oraciones es el laboratorio de TOEFL Writing. Aquí practicas causa, contraste, condición, cláusulas relativas y concesión antes de llevar esas estructuras a emails y discusiones académicas.

Respuesta directa: Build a Sentence es una tarea actual de TOEFL Writing. La práctica WeLearn no intenta adivinar ítems oficiales: entrena estructuras académicas reutilizables para responder con claridad bajo tiempo.

Formato oficial vs estrategia WeLearn

Formato oficial: la especificación ETS 2026 asigna 10 ítems a Build a Sentence dentro de una sección Writing de 12 unidades. Cada ítem presenta contexto y una respuesta que debe reconstruirse con fragmentos.

Estrategia WeLearn: usamos microestructuras como causa, contraste, condición, relativo, concesión y propósito para que el estudiante produzca oraciones completas y transferibles a emails y discusiones académicas.

Fuente oficial revisada: ETS TOEFL iBT Test Content and Structure.

Estructura

Cada oración necesita una base clara: sujeto, verbo y complemento. Los conectores no arreglan una base confusa.

Relación lógica

Because, although, if y while prometen relaciones distintas.

Prompt

Build one academic sentence explaining a cause-result relationship.

Banco de prompts

Prompts Build a Sentence con modelo explicado

Usa estos prompts para practicar después del workbench. Cada modelo muestra una estructura objetivo, por qué funciona, qué error evitar y dónde transferirla dentro de TOEFL Writing.

Prompt 1 · Cause and result

Explain why a university might add more evening buses for students who work part-time.

Estructura objetivo: Main clause + because-clause

Modelo: The university might add more evening buses because many part-time students finish work after regular campus shuttles stop running.

Por qué funciona: The sentence has one clear subject, one modal verb phrase and a because-clause that gives a specific reason.

Error común: Do not write a fragment such as "Because many students work late." The reason needs a complete main clause.

Transferencia: Write an Email: explaining a request clearly and politely.

Prompt 2 · Contrast

Contrast the speed of online feedback with the risk of misunderstanding written comments.

Estructura objetivo: Although-clause + main clause

Modelo: Although online feedback can reach students quickly, written comments may be misunderstood when the teacher cannot explain them in person.

Por qué funciona: Although sets up a benefit, while the main clause gives the limitation. The contrast is explicit and balanced.

Error común: Avoid using although and but in the same sentence; one contrast marker is enough.

Transferencia: Academic Discussion: balancing two sides before giving your view.

Prompt 3 · Condition

State a condition under which longer library hours would actually help students.

Estructura objetivo: If-clause + main clause

Modelo: If the library also provides staff support at night, longer opening hours can help students finish research projects more effectively.

Por qué funciona: The if-clause gives the condition, and the main clause explains the practical result without overclaiming.

Error común: Do not make the claim absolute. Longer hours help only under the condition stated.

Transferencia: Academic Discussion: making a recommendation with a condition.

Prompt 4 · Relative clause

Define the type of peer study group that is most useful for exam preparation.

Estructura objetivo: Noun phrase + relative clause

Modelo: Peer study groups that follow a clear schedule are more useful than informal meetings that have no specific goal.

Por qué funciona: The relative clauses define which groups are useful and which meetings are less effective.

Error común: Make sure the verb agrees with the noun it describes: groups that follow, not groups that follows.

Transferencia: Build a Sentence: defining a key term before explaining it.

Prompt 5 · Concession

Acknowledge a cost of campus gardens while arguing that they can still benefit students.

Estructura objetivo: While-clause + main opinion

Modelo: While campus gardens require regular maintenance, they can give students a practical space to learn about sustainability.

Por qué funciona: The concession admits a real cost, and the main clause gives a stronger educational benefit.

Error común: Do not let the concession become the whole answer. The sentence still needs a clear main point.

Transferencia: Academic Discussion: disagreeing partly without sounding extreme.

Prompt 6 · Purpose

Explain the purpose of teaching students how to use AI tools responsibly.

Estructura objetivo: Infinitive of purpose

Modelo: Teachers should discuss AI tools in class to help students understand when technology supports learning and when it replaces their own thinking.

Por qué funciona: The infinitive phrase to help states the purpose, and the when/when contrast clarifies the boundary.

Error común: Avoid vague purpose language such as "for better education" without explaining what better means.

Transferencia: Academic Discussion: adding a practical reason to a policy opinion.

Preguntas frecuentes
