IELTS Matching Headings

The changing role of public libraries

Choose the correct heading for each paragraph. There are more headings than paragraphs, so some options will not be used.

Paragraph A

sin responder

Public libraries were once defined mainly by the number of books they stored. Today, many library systems measure success differently. A person may visit without borrowing anything: to use a quiet desk, join a workshop, access a database or receive help with an online form. The central idea is no longer that the library owns information, but that it gives people practical access to it.

Paragraph B

sin responder

In many cities, libraries have become informal support centers. Parents bring children to reading clubs, older adults attend digital literacy sessions, and job seekers receive guidance on applications. During heatwaves or storms, some branches also function as safe public spaces. These services make the library part of the social infrastructure of a neighborhood.

Paragraph C

sin responder

The growth of digital services has changed what visitors ask for. People may need help scanning documents, using design software, joining a video interview or protecting personal data online. Some branches lend tablets or Wi-Fi devices, while others offer makerspaces with recording equipment and 3D printers. The library is increasingly a bridge between people and tools they cannot easily afford at home.

Paragraph D

sin responder

These changes have also transformed library work. Staff members still organize collections, but they may also teach classes, troubleshoot devices, coordinate local partnerships and guide users through government websites. This requires communication skills and technical confidence as much as knowledge of cataloguing systems.

Paragraph E

sin responder

Despite predictions that libraries would become irrelevant, usage patterns are more complex. Traditional book borrowing has decreased in some places, yet attendance at events, demand for study areas and use of digital services have grown. The challenge for library leaders is to explain this mixed picture to funders who may still judge libraries by older measures.

Preguntas frecuentes
