¿Cuándo y cómo se usa?
La mayoría de los sustantivos forman el plural añadiendo -s: book → books. Es la regla por defecto y la que más usarás. Pero según cómo termine la palabra hay variantes de escritura, y existe un grupo de plurales irregulares que se aprenden uno a uno.
Las variantes de escritura son pocas y se memorizan rápido: -es tras s, sh, ch, x, z (box → boxes); consonante + y → -ies (city → cities); vocal + y solo añade -s (boy → boys); y muchas palabras en -f/-fe cambian a -ves (knife → knives).
Para el hispanohablante hay un detalle clave que casi nadie enseña: existen sustantivos INCONTABLES que no tienen plural (information, advice, furniture, money). Decir "informations" o "advices" es un error muy marcado; se dice "some information", "a piece of advice".
Las reglas de escritura
Regla general: + s (cat → cats). Tras s, sh, ch, x, z: + es (bus → buses, watch → watches); algunos en -o también (tomato → tomatoes, potato → potatoes). Consonante + y: la y cambia a -ies (baby → babies). Vocal + y: solo + s (day → days, boy → boys).
Un grupo grande termina en -f o -fe y cambia a -ves: knife → knives, wife → wives, leaf → leaves, life → lives.
Plurales irregulares (memorizar)
No siguen ninguna regla y hay que aprenderlos: man → men, woman → women, child → children, foot → feet, tooth → teeth, mouse → mice, person → people. Algunos no cambian: fish → fish, sheep → sheep.
Incontables: no tienen plural
Palabras como information, advice, furniture, money, bread o water son incontables: no llevan -s y no admiten "a/an". No se dice "an information" ni "two informations"; se dice "some information" o "a piece of information / advice".
Es uno de los errores más frecuentes del hispanohablante, porque en español sí decimos "informaciones" o "consejos".

💡 Truco: Vocal + y solo añade -s (boys, days); consonante + y cambia a -ies (cities, babies). Y cuidado con los incontables: "information", "advice" y "furniture" NUNCA llevan -s.
