What you want
One number, before twelve o'clock: how many plates at one. You are cooking for one o'clock, not for a river trip.
Three things you won't do
- You keep the pot on the fire, because you have raw cassava in twenty liters of hot water.
- You don't say that the group made a mistake. You need them here at one, and she is the one who asks them.
- You don't open the fridge until she gives you three things: how many, before what hour, and how they get back. Nothing here is free. You offer two options before she says yes.
Nobody out there knows this
- You put in the cassava and the plantain at twelve, so at eleven forty you only have broth.
- You took the second chicken out at seven and cut it. If you put it in before twelve, you feed twelve. If you don't, you lose it tonight.
- You can't put it back: you have Saturday's rice and chicken in there, in the one container that is your Monday and Tuesday lunch.
If she rides off and you have no answer
You have twelve plates and nobody at the table. You lose the chicken tonight, and next Sunday they are back in your patio.

Closing criterion
Each of you says three things out loud. Six in total. Nobody says the other person's three.
Only A can say: what goes in the pot at twelve, for how many, and what you lose tonight if that number comes late · what leaves this patio now, what stays, and what that costs on Monday and Tuesday · what A needs at one o'clock and can't do with the fire on.
Only B can say: how many really come back, and before what time · who rides and who walks, and how long that walk takes · what B tells the six at the river, and before what hour.
Together, once: the time of the second round, and who's at the gate when the first people arrive.
And one thing stays open on purpose: who doesn't eat with the others, and who fixes it. Say it with a name and a time.
Five rules:
- Nobody repeats the other's line. Say the other one's line and it doesn't count — they say it again.
- It counts if you check with your own words. So, we're clear then is not one of the six lines, and it isn't cheating either.
- Nobody just says yes. Yeah, sure, okay, fine and that works are none of the six lines.
- A number with no hour on it is not a line. And nothing leaves this patio for free: say what you give, and say what you get for it.
- Nobody writes anything down and nobody reads anything out. This is a patio. There's no number to confirm and nothing to sign.
Success: You said what you lose tonight if that number comes late, and what Monday and Tuesday cost you. You had a real number, and the chicken went in at twelve. You said what leaves and what stays. You asked for help at one o'clock. The open question has a name and an hour, and you never blamed the group.
