📈 Sub-skill 3 — Trends

Identify relevant trends

In IELTS Task 1, you do not describe every figure — you identify the 2–3 most important trends. Practise deciding what deserves space and what does not.

Official format versus WeLearn strategy

Official format: IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 may present line graphs, bar charts, tables, maps or processes. Identifying trends is an analysis skill, not a separate official task type.

WeLearn strategy: We use mini visuals to practise what to include and omit before writing a complete overview paragraph.

Task 1 visual types

Identify the visual before practising a sub-skill.

The response structure changes with the input: a line graph requires trend language, a table requires grouping, a process requires sequencing and a map requires spatial transformation. This guide connects the official IELTS format with the WeLearn teaching strategy.

Line graph

Changes over time

Overview: Look for the dominant trend, line crossing, peak, fall or convergence.

Body: Group the timeline into meaningful periods: start, rapid change, stability or finish.

rose steadily, peaked at, declined gradually, overtook, remained stable

Practise this visual type →

Bar chart

Comparisons between categories

Overview: Look for the highest or lowest category and the clearest contrast.

Body: Group similar categories instead of describing every bar separately.

higher than, whereas, considerably lower, the largest proportion

Practise this visual type →

Pie charts

Parts of a whole

Overview: Look for the dominant segment and distribution changes when two charts are shown.

Body: Compare large and small proportions without listing every slice.

accounted for, made up, represented, the smallest share

Practise this visual type →

Table

Dense row-and-column data

Overview: Look for extremes, row or column patterns and categories that form groups.

Body: Turn the table into two logical groups before writing.

the figure for, respectively, by contrast, across all categories

Process diagram

Production stages or a cycle

Overview: Mention the number of stages and whether the process is linear or cyclical.

Body: Use the passive voice and chronological order; do not invent reasons.

is collected, is heated, after this, subsequently, finally

Map

Spatial changes over time

Overview: Look for overall development, replacements, expansion or reduction.

Body: Organise the response by zones or by before-and-after changes.

was replaced by, was converted into, to the north of, adjacent to

Practise this visual type →

Mixed chart

Two connected visuals

Overview: Find the relationship between the visuals instead of treating them as separate tasks.

Body: Use one paragraph per visual or group them around a shared relationship.

while, in relation to, this corresponded with, a similar pattern

Before practising: how to read a trend

Do not start by selecting randomly. First identify what can count as a trend for the visual: a direction or crossing in a line graph, a hierarchy in bars, a distribution in pies, a pattern in a table, a sequence in a process or a spatial change on a map.

Internet access in three regions, 2000-2020. Region A moves from 30% to 88%; Region B moves from 12% to 79%; Region C moves from 6% to 57%.Internet access in three regions, 2000-20200%25%50%75%100%20002005201020152020Region ARegion BRegion C

Overall direction

Most lines rise or fall.

Start by checking whether the series share a direction. This pattern often becomes the first sentence of the overview.

💡 Overview rule: mention the overall pattern, the clearest extreme and the most meaningful comparison. Avoid specific figures in the overview and never invent a trend that is not shown.

What counts as a relevant trend

A relevant trend is not just any figure shown in the visual. It is an observation that helps the reader understand the complete story: direction, contrast, a change in position or an unusual event.

Overall pattern

Do most categories rise, fall, remain stable or change direction?

All three categories increased, although at different speeds.

Change in leadership

Does one line or category overtake another?

Country A overtook Country B in the second half of the period.

Extremes

Which category finishes highest, lowest or with the strongest change?

The most dramatic growth was recorded in Latin America.

Relevant anomaly

Is there a sudden fall, peak or recovery that changes the story?

All countries experienced a sharp fall in 2020 before any recovery.

IELTS Academic — Line graph

The line graph below shows the percentage of the population with internet access in three world regions between 2000 and 2020.

Internet penetration rate (%) — three world regions, 2000–2020

Select the 3 most important observations to include in your response:

All three regions experienced significant growth in internet usage over the period.

North America had the highest internet penetration rate at every data point.

Latin America's rate rose from 5% in 2000 to 35% in 2010.

By 2020, the gap between regions had narrowed significantly compared to 2000.

Africa saw a slight dip in internet usage around 2007.
