📚 Task 1 sub-skill — Data vocabulary and cohesion

Data vocabulary and cohesion

Choose language that matches the visual, then connect it into a precise Task 1 sentence. This route supports the overview and both detail paragraphs; it is not a list of impressive words to memorise.

Official format versus WeLearn strategy

Official format: IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 requires clear descriptions of visual data. Vocabulary is not a separate official task; it is a quality criterion within the response.

WeLearn strategy: We train verbs, adverbs and structures to improve precision without memorising inflated phrases.

Task 1 visual types

Identify the visual before practising a sub-skill.

The response structure changes with the input: a line graph requires trend language, a table requires grouping, a process requires sequencing and a map requires spatial transformation. This guide connects the official IELTS format with the WeLearn teaching strategy.

Line graph

Changes over time

Overview: Look for the dominant trend, line crossing, peak, fall or convergence.

Body: Group the timeline into meaningful periods: start, rapid change, stability or finish.

rose steadily, peaked at, declined gradually, overtook, remained stable

Practise this visual type →

Bar chart

Comparisons between categories

Overview: Look for the highest or lowest category and the clearest contrast.

Body: Group similar categories instead of describing every bar separately.

higher than, whereas, considerably lower, the largest proportion

Practise this visual type →

Pie charts

Parts of a whole

Overview: Look for the dominant segment and distribution changes when two charts are shown.

Body: Compare large and small proportions without listing every slice.

accounted for, made up, represented, the smallest share

Practise this visual type →

Table

Dense row-and-column data

Overview: Look for extremes, row or column patterns and categories that form groups.

Body: Turn the table into two logical groups before writing.

the figure for, respectively, by contrast, across all categories

Practise this visual type →

Process diagram

Production stages or a cycle

Overview: Mention the number of stages and whether the process is linear or cyclical.

Body: Use the passive voice and chronological order; do not invent reasons.

is collected, is heated, after this, subsequently, finally

Practise this visual type →

Map

Spatial changes over time

Overview: Look for overall development, replacements, expansion or reduction.

Body: Organise the response by zones or by before-and-after changes.

was replaced by, was converted into, to the north of, adjacent to

Practise this visual type →

Mixed chart

Two connected visuals

Overview: Find the relationship between the visuals instead of treating them as separate tasks.

Body: Use one paragraph per visual or group them around a shared relationship.

while, in relation to, this corresponded with, a similar pattern

Practise this visual type →

Choose vocabulary by visual and paragraph purpose

The same word is not useful in every task. Select language from the evidence and from the job the sentence must do.

Read the visual before choosing vocabulary

The correct verb and modifier depend on what the visual actually shows. Identify the direction, size and time frame first; then build the sentence.

Vocabulary bank by function

This vocabulary bank separates direction, intensity and grammatical form. Treat it as an operating list: do not memorise isolated words; learn when to use them.

Strong increases

rocketsoarsurgejump sharplyrise dramatically

Use these only when the change is large and rapid. Do not write "soared slightly".

Moderate increases

riseincreasegrowclimbedge up

These are safer for ordinary or gradual changes.

Strong decreases

plummetplungedrop sharplyfall dramatically

Reserve these for large falls; use "dip" or "fall slightly" for a small decrease.

Moderate decreases

falldecreasedeclinedropdip

Decline sounds more formal; dip usually describes a small or temporary fall.

Stability and irregular change

remain stablelevel offfluctuatehover aroundrecover

Use these for lines that do not rise or fall in a clean pattern.

Useful nouns

Alternate verbs and nouns to improve Lexical Resource.

Intensity

slightgradualsteadymarkedsubstantialdramatic

Match intensity to the data: slight for small changes and dramatic for large ones.

Contrast linkers

Use these to compare two categories without repeating the same sentence pattern.

Reusable sentence structures

X rose sharply from A to B between YEAR and YEAR.

There was a gradual decline in X over the period.

X reached a peak of A in YEAR before falling to B.

The figure for X remained stable at around A.

While X increased, Y followed the opposite trend.

X accounted for the largest share, whereas Y represented the smallest proportion.

The amount of X was roughly twice as high as that of Y.

By the end of the period, X had overtaken Y.
